MY EXPERIENCE
Yamashira was designed as a replica of a palace near Kyoto. It’s halfway up in the Hollywood Hills, and gives a delicate Japanese vibe. Quite a number of famous movies were shot here, including Memoirs of a Geisha, and that’s how I learned of it when I was a guest there for a dinner date.
My first impression was the striking setting and the terrific panoramic view of Los Angeles, especially striking at sunset. And the restaurant’s traditional Japanese garden was lovely when we went for a look after dinner.
Alas, the food was unmemorable. Perhaps the chef was trying to adapt Japanese cuisine to American tastes, but the result was only middling.
I’d come back, but only for a glass of champagne and to enjoy the view and ambiance.
